Alison Turnbull’s recent work has concentrated on images of plans of buildings.
These plans have been found either by accident or by deliberation and this series of paintings relates to such buildings as a library, lighthouse, prison, apartment and swimming pool.
The paintings themselves take on a symbolic quality: it is not apparent as to what the buildings are from the delicate, forms free-floating against subtle colour fields.
Quietly assertive, these delicate works fuse the representational with the abstract, and a modernist sensibility with something far more searching.
