Empire of Light is a new work related to Alison Turnbull's recent exhibition at Matt's Gallery, Family Resemblance. Beginning with René Magritte's Empire of Light (1953-1954), the video is a serial game of 333 postcards serial (sequential?) game of 333 art postcards from her existing collection that the artist posted daily on instagram from March 2024.

For 333 days, Turnbull photographed and shared a postcard, linked by a visual echo; each image becomes a template for what comes next. The result is a visual and playful game, which spills over into Turnbull's new body of paintings, shown in Family Resemblance at Matt's Gallery.
