Peasant Ware: with Lovers tea towel is printed with an image of Ceramic Gingerbread Mould with Lovers, European, circa 1475-1500.

Very few ceramic moulds have been preserved, though many were produced. Moulds like these would have been used to make inexpensive spiced bread sculptures to be sold or shared at weddings, revelries and fairs. The figures are unapologetic, naked and pleasure seeking - in parody of the detailed portraits, and chaste courtship rituals on representations made for the nobility.
