Melanie Jackson

Wellcome Collection exhibition and Microbiopolitics of Milk publication

Melanie Jackson's work Deeper in the Pyramid is included in an upcoming exhibition Milk at the Wellcome Collection, and a new publication Microbiopolitics of Milk, edited by INLAND as part of Documenta Fifteen.

Deeper in the Pyramid was an expansive new body of work by Melanie Jackson comprising of animation, sculpture, performance and a publication in a graphic novel format, written in collaboration with Esther Leslie.

Visit the Matt's Gallery shop to read more about Deeper in the Pyramid and purchase the graphic novel publication.

The Wellcome Collection's major new exhibition explores our relationship with milk and its place in global politics, society and culture. Featuring over 100 items including historical objects, artworks and new commissions, this will be the first museum survey to consider the complexity of this everyday substance and how it has come to be central to our perceptions of nutrition and ‘good health.’ It will also look at the introduction of scientific principles into farming and motherhood, and ask what the future of milk might look like.

Milk is open 30 March - 10 September 2023.

In the context of INLAND’s Academy at documenta fifteen, Microbiopolitics of Milk presents the grounding basis for a research project around Milk as a bio-cultural substance, through its implications in the regimes of contemporary biopolitics, economics and representation. Featuring texts by Heather Paxson, Esther Leslie & Melanie Jackson, Harry G. West, Vinciane Despret, Chris Fite-Wassilak and Richie Nimmo, reflecting the different dimensions of milk in a variety of research fields.
