S/He is still inside you

29 May – 12 June 2020

S/He is still inside you (2020) is a new work that builds on Vanishing Twin (Tetragametic Chimerism), a video and photographic installation exhibited at Fotogalleriet, Oslo with PRAKSIS in 2019.

S/He is still inside you emerges from Seers’ longstanding interest in heterochromia - the condition of having two different coloured eyes. A possible cause is tetragametic chimerism, which can occur in humans if an embryo dies very early in pregnancy and some of its cells are “absorbed” by its fraternal twin. A chimera is, in effect, a single organism that contains two or more sets of DNA. This condition denotes a physical manifestation of the usually more psychologically framed divided or multiple self.

Made following meetings with people with heterochromia, often through an open call on the internet, S/He is still inside you considers the phenomenal complexity of the psychological and biological body, in parallel to the prosthetic quality of the smartphone as an extension to the human mind/body. In this work, the smartphone manifests as a node that accesses, supports and instigates virtual states of distraction, absorption and preoccupation; provoking dopamine spikes leading to addictions and obsessions. This relationship to this ‘communication device’ now shapes much of our experience of the world. But its technological imperative is ultimately a means of control and surveillance on the out of control subject.
