Means to an End

17 – 22 May 1983

Martello Street

Means to an End is the title of new paintings by Gerard Hemsworth to be exhibited at Matt's Gallery, from Tuesday 17th May to Sunday 22nd May 1983. This will give London a rare opportunity to catch up with the work.

Those familiar with the earlier work will appreciate the logical development manifest in the large paintings exhibited on this occasion. Hemsworth’s preoccupation with the ambiguities of representation and the dangers of maintaining lazy preconceptions of reality remains central to his work. These unsettling concerns operate on several levels; the very specific nature of the imagery and its humour and familiarity are reassuring, encouraging an immediate acceptance. But all is not what it seems and the inevitable attempt at a rationalisation provokes unexpected leaps of the imagination that are most disconcerting. Categorisation within the generality of contemporary stylistic trends is impossible; these are devious pictures, packed with teasing conundra that continue to animate the content long after the first kick into consciousness has been administered.
