Jo Stockham
Capture
3 – 11 November 2018
Webster Road
Jo Stockham presents a body of new work for the sixteenth instalment of Matt’s Gallery’s ongoing series of 10-day shows at 92 Webster Road.
The work builds on a working practice that has often involved using small elements, objects, texts and images to build narratives for particular sites. For Stockham the site might be a page, a model or a simple geometric shape.
For Capture Stockham is exploring so called cutting-edge 3-D scanning and printing technologies, pushing them to and sometimes beyond their limits to work with the glitches and errors inherent in these new technologies.
The title Capture resonates with a sense of entrapment and anxiety, but also offers a technical description of the scanning processes at the heart of this body of work.
The works shown have grown from a residency undertaken at the Centre for Drawing in Wimbledon where the artist explored the corner as a condition of space and the way in which the human body activates such a space. Drawing on preoccupations with the shifting nature of the real and the virtual and our ever increasing engagement with technology, the artist is interested in how the pages of a book, or the volume of gallery can create a virtual space.
Capture continues this exploration in relation to the 3x3x3 metre cube at Matt’s Gallery, using tiny surrogate figures to discover relations between geometric structures and subjective positions.
The work is informed by the artist’s recent experience of a choreography course at Siobhan Davies Dance Studios and a history of teaching sculpture, print and architecture.
Jo Stockham is Professor and Head of the Print Programme at the Royal College of Art.
