The Circle

To be
take a minds eye compass point
and draw around yourself
a circle
and keep true to all there is therein

From the centre point look
out
and take in the
circumference of all you view
you cannot see the whole at once

From this point
the eyes (the first circle)
look around the bounding line
surveying
catching up with their beginning

A moving
present
tucked between
past
future

And so within the
thought of a circle
you have a space to think
take a breath
and see the show.

Matt’s Gallery presents ACT, an exhibition by Clare Gasson.

The exhibition centres around a collection of abstract drawings produced by the artist in a series started in 1999. The pieces are drawn on one side of a single sheet of A4 photocopy paper using a wooden pencil similar to one you might find in a hardware supply company.

These A4 drawings are the results of private daily practice performances to find a thought space to begin work in the studio. Each embodies an index of time and repetition. They act to chart the rhythm of the artist’s day and are worked on little by little each visit. With several in progress at once, they may take months or years to complete. In around 2016 the pieces were collectively titled Equivalents after AS from an idea started in 1999. The drawings at Matt’s Gallery have been selected from this on-going series.

Clare Gasson lives and works in London. Her practice spans a range of media including scriptwriting, performance, video, sculpture, painting, drawing and photography.

ACT – Everything is work everything is performance.
